Raymond Loewy - American Career

Raymond Loewy as soldier

Loewy studied at LycĂ©e Chaptal and began an engineer’s course which he had to break off in 1914 because of the First World War. After the war he emigrated to the USA and worked as his first and only salaried employment as a shop-window decorator for Saks and Macy’s.

Till 1929 he earned his money as a free illustrator for some fashion magazines. Although trained as an engineer, the job was temporarily right to combine his sense of style with his training as an engineer. Finally, in 1929 he became the Art Director of the Westinghouse Electric Company and soon opened his own office where he founded his legendary career as an industrial designer.
